Stunt Kids

Overview & History: Released in 1992 by the Taiwanese developer Sachen, Stunt Kids is a rare, unlicensed side-scrolling action-platformer for the Nintendo Entertainment System. The game bypassed Nintendo's official cartridge lockouts, releasing on standalone Sachen cartridges and popular multi-game carts of the era. The storyline follows a group of daring neighborhood children who enter an extreme obstacle course tournament to prove their athletic superiority. Players must guide these brave kids through various hazardous locales, including chaotic city streets, active construction zones, and surreal toy-filled fantasy lands, all while avoiding wacky enemies and environmental traps.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Stunt Kids sets itself apart from standard NES platformers by focusing heavily on momentum and vehicle-based physics. Players choose between characters utilizing different extreme sports gear, such as skateboards, rollerblades, and pogo sticks. Each vehicle features distinct handling mechanics; for instance, the skateboard yields high speed but suffers from slippery deceleration, whereas the pogo stick offers incredible vertical lift but requires constant hopping. Levels are designed like obstacle courses, packed with ramps, high-rise scaffolding, and spiked hazards. To survive, players must master mid-air balancing and precision landing. Enemies like aggressive birds, moving mechanical toys, and stray dogs litter the path, and they can be dispatched by jumping on them or utilizing projectile attacks like throwing helmets. Collecting stars and trophies scattered throughout the stages awards extra points, and grabbing rare power-ups grants temporary speed bursts or invincibility shields.
