The original Japanese version of the game is about a ghost named Q-tarō, a character from a Fujiko Fujio manga series titled Obake no Q-tarō. It was retitled and heavily modified for its North American release since its source material was not familiar to Western audiences. In 2014, the original Japanese version was fully translated by fans and released as Q-Taro the Ghost – Bow Wow Panic.

Released by Bandai in December 1985 in Japan as Oira Achama and later localized by Aicom for North America in December 1987, Chubby Cherub is a bizarre, vertical and horizontal scrolling platformer for the Nintendo Entertainment System. Based on Fujio Akatsuka’s manga, the game casts players as a relentlessly plump, diaper-wearing cherub named Ahachama on a quest to win the heart of his ethereal, pink-haired angel girlfriend. Plagued by notoriously sluggish pacing, floaty physics, and bizarre enemy designs ranging from stray cats to flying food items, the game became an obscure curio of the early NES library, remembered more for its eccentric premise and extreme difficulty than refined gameplay.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The core gameplay revolves around airborne navigation rather than traditional ground-based platforming, as the cherub constantly floats using a pair of minuscule feathered wings. Players must carefully manage a depleting heart meter, which functions as both health and a hunger gauge. To survive the urban rooftops and surreal dreamscapes, Ahachama must constantly consume falling junk food, hearts, and power-ups to replenish energy while dodging hazardous urban fauna like pigeons and stray dogs. Combat is handled uniquely: instead of traditional weapons, the cherub fires magical projectiles or drops hearts to pacify enemies and win them over. Reaching the end of each stage requires navigating labyrinthine scrolling maps within a strict time limit, culminating in a reunion with his beloved girlfriend before moving on to increasingly erratic environments.
