Description

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, brave rebellious fighters destroyed the menacing hordes of The Machine and its tyranny-spreading satellite, which circled the planet of the brave, the planet called Landorin. The evil moon was gone, but Landorin wasn´t free. The Machine still ruled the surface of the planet. The Landorins retreated to the inner core of their world to await their inevitable death. The machines and mutants, however, went on to roam through the deserted ruins of a long-lost paradise in search of the entrance to the secret caves.

Before the Landorins retreated, they managed to send a desperate cry for help: A last radio signal floats through the endless reaches of the tri-solar system and off to the farthest reaches of the universe. The cry was heard by a man with the courage to face the hordes and free the last survivors of Landorin, a man on his most dangerous adventure ever… Turrican.

Super Turrican

Overview & History

Released by Imagineer in 1993 for the Nintendo Entertainment System, Super Turrican is a remarkable 8-bit distillation of the beloved European run-and-gun franchise originally spearheaded by Factor 5. Pushing the aging NES hardware to its absolute limits, this port brilliantly adapts the sprawling, ambient sci-fi atmosphere and iconic Chris Hülsbeck-inspired audio aesthetic of its 16-bit siblings. Players assume the role of Bren McGuire, a galactic freedom fighter tasked with infiltrating the heavily fortified automated fortress of the evil machine entity known as The Machine, to liberate a colonized planet from total mechanical annihilation.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard linear side-scrollers, Super Turrican on the NES emphasizes vertical exploration, sprawling maze-like stages, and relentless enemy onslaughts. Bren's arsenal includes a versatile, upgradeable multi-directional beam weapon, power-spread shots, and lethal land mines. A defining mechanic is the signature Gyro-Copter / Morph Ball transformation, allowing Bren to curl into an invulnerable, rolling energy sphere to navigate claustrophobic tunnels while laying explosives for structural demolition. Spanning expansive worlds filled with multi-tiered platforms, hazardous terrain, and screen-filling robotic bosses, the game rewards strategic positioning, quick reflexes, and thorough environmental exploration.
