Swords and Serpents

Overview & History

Released by Interplay in 1990, Swords and Serpents brought the classic, hardcore dungeon-crawling traditions of Western computer RPGs onto the Nintendo Entertainment System. Distinct from the platformers and side-scrollers dominating the 8-bit era, this first-person role-playing game tasked players with navigating the treacherous, maze-like labyrinths beneath the kingdom of Pendor. The royal court faced ultimate doom when the evil sorcerer Malaphar stole the sacred Amulet of Pendor and unleashed an army of demonic beasts and massive serpents. Players assemble a custom party of four brave adventurers—choosing from fighters, thieves, and mages—to delve deep into multi-tiered, trap-ridden subterranean levels, vanquish monstrous bosses, and ultimately reclaim the artifact to save the realm.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Swords and Serpents utilizes a strict grid-based, first-person perspective reminiscent of classic PC titles like Wizardry or The Bard's Tale. Exploration requires careful mapping, as players rotate in 90-degree increments through dim corridors fraught with hidden pit traps, locked doors requiring skeleton keys, and spinning floor tiles designed to induce disorientation. Turn-based combat engages the party against roaming enemies, requiring tactical management of physical weapon strikes, offensive spellcasting, healing magic, and defensive formations where front-line warriors shield fragile rear-line spellcasters. Experience points gathered from victories allow characters to level up, increasing vital statistics, hit points, and magic reserves. Players must meticulously manage gold reserves to purchase superior chainmail, longswords, and mystical staves at scattered in-dungeon outposts, ensuring the party survives the escalating difficulty curve of the deeper dungeon floors.
