Tetris 2

Released by Nintendo in late 1993 for the Nintendo Entertainment System, Tetris 2 (known in Japan as Tetris Flash) departed significantly from Alexey Pajitnov’s legendary 1989 precursor. Rather than focusing on structural line-clears, this sequel challenged players with color-matching puzzles. It arrived during the twilight of the NES lifespan, offering enhanced graphical vibrancy and a catchy, upbeat soundtrack that breathed new life into the aging 8-bit hardware.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The core gameplay loop shifts away from structural geometry toward strict color coordination. Players manipulate falling Tetriminos made of fused, multi-colored square blocks. To clear them, you must align three or more identical colors—red, yellow, or blue—either horizontally or vertically. The ultimate goal in each level is to destroy the flashing "target" blocks pre-seeded at the bottom of the matrix. Eliminating a target block triggers a satisfying cascade, wiping out all static blocks of that corresponding color. The game boasts a demanding single-player Mode A (marathon), a brain-teasing puzzle Mode B, and a highly competitive, split-screen Vs. Mode against challenging computer AI or a second player.

Keyboard Controls

  • Arrow Keys / D-Pad: Shift falling blocks left and right, or press Down to accelerate their descent.
  • Z / X Keys (A / B Buttons): Rotate the individual block colors within the falling piece to set up matches.
  • Enter: Confirm menu selections and pause/resume the puzzle action.
