Description

Toki, known in Japan as JuJu Densetsu is a shoot ’em up platformer arcade game, or a “run and gun” developed and published in Japan by TAD Corporation and published in North America by Fabtek. It features elements of tongue-in-cheek humor combined with the action. The player takes control of an enchanted ape who must battle hordes of jungle monsters with energy balls from his mouth (described humorously as “monkey-spit” or “monkey-vomit” by some gamers). The ultimate goal is to destroy the evil wizard who cast a spell on you; therefore transforming yourself from an ape back into a human, and rescuing the kidnapped princess. The game was ported to several video game consoles and home computers.

Toki

Overview & History

Originally birthed in the arcades by TAD Corporation in 1989, Toki made its infamous leap to the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1991, courtesy of publisher Ocean Software. Unlike typical gritty platformers of the era, this whimsical yet challenging adventure tasks players with controlling a peaceful jungle warrior named Toki. Transformed into an unfortunate, slow-moving ape by the wicked voodoo sorcerer Vookimedlo—who also kidnapped Toki's beloved girlfriend, Miho—our primate protagonist must traverse treacherous, living ecosystems. Armed only with the power to spit lethal, energy-infused projectile bubbles from his snout, Toki has to reclaim his humanity one perilous stage at a time, battling through cavernous labyrinths, underwater ruins, and volcanic underworlds filled with bizarre, grotesque fauna.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The NES port of Toki retains the punishing difficulty of its arcade predecessor while introducing unique console-specific adjustments. Progression is entirely linear across six distinct worlds, heavily dependent on precision jumping and constant, rhythmic firing. Toki’s default spit attack can be upgraded by collecting special power-ups dropped by defeated enemies or hidden inside floating mystery eggs. These enhancements transform his standard bubbles into rapid-fire flame spirits, bouncing basketballs, or wide-spread laser beams. Survival also hinges on temporary defensive gear: picking up a football helmet grants Toki a shield against a single hit, while running shoes temporarily boost movement speed. However, Toki remains vulnerable to instant-death hazards like spikes and bottomless pits. Players must navigate moving platforms, dodge falling stalactites, and overcome screen-filling boss encounters—such as the labyrinthine rock monster Boloroch—by exploiting strict attack patterns within tight time limits.
