Treasure Master

Released in 1991 by American Softworks Corporation and developed by Software Creations, Treasure Master is one of the NES's most fascinating historical curiosities. Designed around a high-stakes real-world promotional contest co-sponsored by MTV, players raced to complete the game's grueling levels to obtain a secret password. On April 11, 1992, a master code was broadcast, allowing players who finished the game to enter a drawing for massive prizes. The narrative follows a young boy named Scooter who enters a virtual reality computer system to recover lost treasures across five surreal, hazard-filled worlds, ranging from a microchip desert to a spooky space station.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard action-platformers of its era, Treasure Master prioritizes environmental puzzle-solving over direct combat. Scooter cannot attack enemies directly; instead, he must navigate treacherous terrain by utilizing specialized gear found throughout the stages. Players must strategically deploy items such as spring-loaded boots for high jumps, scuba gear for underwater exploration, a jetpack for flight, and various keys to unlock gated progress. Misusing an item or losing it can render a level unbeatable, demanding precise planning and memory. The game's difficulty is notoriously high, featuring unforgiving collision detection, instant-death hazards, and a strict timer that forces players to optimize their movement paths.

Keyboard Controls

  • Arrow Keys / D-Pad: Move Scooter left and right, climb ladders, or crouch.
  • Action Keys: Jump (A Button) / Use equipped item or tool (B Button).
  • Enter: Start / Pause the game and open the item selection menu.
