Description

You pilot the TC-17 Twin Cobra assault helicopter to fight the forces of Commander Anziga, the myopic leader of the nation of Kaban. Your job is to fly into Kaban and take out the entire military base of Commander Anziga.

You will fight small helicopters, tanks and stationary guns, defeat the large helicopters to get power-ups. By picking up colored icons (blue, yellow, red or green) you can change to different weapon types. Blue is a forward spread shot, yellow is a four-way shot, red is a wide forward laser shot and green is a continuous forward laser shot.

At the end of each section, you land on a carrier ship and count up your bonuses.

Twin Cobra

Overview & History: Originally developed by the legendary shoot 'em up pioneers at Toaplan, Twin Cobra made its high-octane landing on the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1989, courtesy of publisher Romstar. As an ambitious home port of the highly successful 1987 arcade classic Kyūkyoku Tiger, this vertical-scrolling shooter tasks players with piloting the advanced TC-17 Twin Cobra attack helicopter. The storyline puts you in the cockpit against a ruthless, technologically superior invading military force. Your singular mission is to fly deep into hostile territory, decimate their naval fleets, shatter their armored tank divisions, and neutralize their fortified command centers across eight punishing, vertically scrolling stages.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The NES conversion of Twin Cobra successfully retains the relentless difficulty and strategic weapon system that defined the original arcade experience. Players navigate their chopper through full eight-way directional movement, weaving through dense screens of enemy fire. Eliminating specific carrier vehicles releases colored weapon icons that cycle dynamically: Red grants a wide-angle spread shot, Blue fires a concentrated high-impact laser, Yellow launches a useful four-directional defense stream, and Green deploys devastating straight-firing missiles. Collecting identical colors upgrades your current weapon's firepower. Furthermore, players must strategically deploy the limited "B" icon bombs, which generate a massive, screen-clearing blast that absorbs enemy projectiles and inflicts heavy damage on bosses. Point-increasing star bonuses encourage high-risk navigation to maximize high scores.
