Ufouria: The Saga

Originally released by Sunsoft in Japan in 1991 under the title Hebereke, and later imported to PAL territories, Ufouria: The Saga is a legendary, cult-classic Metroidvania for the 8-bit NES. The quirky narrative begins when the protagonist, Bop-Louie, tumbles down a deep dimensional crater. To return home to Ufouria, he must navigate a bizarre, interconnected open world, locate his three brainwashed friends, defeat them in combat to restore their lost memories, and recover three sacred keys hidden across the land.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Ufouria stands out for its ahead-of-its-time, non-linear gameplay, requiring players to hot-swap between four unique characters to overcome environmental obstacles. Bop-Louie is the balanced lead who can climb vertical walls with suction cups. Once rescued, Freeon-Leon the orange lizard can walk safely across ice and swim on the surface of water. Shades, a tall ghost wearing a sheet, can jump incredibly high and float across massive chasms. Finally, Gil the anglerfish is the only hero capable of diving deep underwater. Combat is wonderfully bizarre: players defeat enemies by stomping on their heads to stun them, then pulling out their own eyeballs (Hebe-balls) to throw as destructive projectiles. Locating hidden items like life-restoring medicine, map screens, and power-up containers is critical to conquering this surreal masterpiece's boss fights.
