Wall $treet Kid

Overview & History

Released by SOFEL in 1990 for the Nintendo Entertainment System, Wall $treet Kid stands out as one of the few financial simulation games of the 8-bit era. Originally released in Japan as Family Wall Street, the Western localization adjusted the currency, stock names, and several graphical elements to better suit American audiences. Players step into the expensive loafers of Benedict, a young man who stands to inherit a staggering $600 billion fortune from his wealthy late uncle. However, there is a catch: Benedict must first prove his financial acumen. Starting with a seed sum of $1 million, players must successfully day-trade on the stock market to purchase increasingly expensive luxury assets—including a spacious estate, a yacht, and eventually a castle—all while keeping Benedict's demanding fiancée, Connie, happy within a strict six-month deadline.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Gameplay is entirely menu-driven, blending financial strategy with lifestyle simulation. Players must carefully manage a daily routine divided into morning and afternoon trading sessions. Success requires researching fictionalized corporations like "Yapple" (Apple) and "Chryslum" (Chrysler) through newspaper clippings, consulting with a personal broker named Ruth, and executing timely buy or sell orders. Beyond the trading floor, players must balance Benedict’s personal life. Neglecting Connie by failing to buy her expensive jewelry or carnations results in an instant game over. Additionally, players must budget for weekend dates, home layouts, and gym memberships to keep stress levels managed. Progress is preserved using a standard NES password system, which tracks your accumulated wealth and current calendar date.

Keyboard Controls

  • Arrow Keys / D-Pad: Navigate office menus, stock lists, and calendar dates
  • Z / X Keys (A/B Buttons): Select stock options, confirm financial transactions, and cancel selections
  • Enter (Start): Advance daily text, skip newspaper headlines, and pause the simulation
