Wally Bear and the NO! Gang

Released in 1992 by American Video Entertainment (AVE), Wally Bear and the NO! Gang is a notorious unlicensed NES platformer developed in cooperation with pediatricians to promote drug-free lifestyles. Designed as an interactive "just say no" campaign, the game places players in the paws of Wally Bear. Wally must trek across his colorful yet hazardous neighborhood to reach his Uncle Sherman's house for a party. Along his journey, he is continuously confronted by the "NO! Gang"—a group of peer-pressuring anthropomorphic animals like Toby Tobacco and Putrid Polar Bear who try to lure Wally into substance abuse, requiring quick reflexes and smart choices to survive.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The gameplay blends traditional side-scrolling mascot platforming with educational elements. Wally travels primarily on foot or by riding his signature skateboard, which drastically increases his forward momentum but makes handling and stopping much more slippery. Players must navigate treacherous urban streets, dark subways, and green parks filled with obstacles like toxic sludge, spikes, and falling construction debris. Wally defends himself by throwing frisbees at antagonists or simply leaping over them. To reinforce the game’s anti-drug message, players collect healthy foods like apples to restore their health meter, alongside gold letters to spell "NO!" for extra lives. At the end of several stages, Wally must successfully answer educational pop quizzes about the dangers of smoking, drinking, and peer pressure to proceed.
