Overview & History

Released by Jaleco in 1991, Whomp 'Em is a vibrant action-platformer for the NES with a fascinating localization history. Originally released in Japan as Saiyūki World II (inspired by the Chinese Journey to the West legend), the game was completely re-themed for Western audiences, transforming the monkey king protagonist into Soaring Eagle, a brave Native American warrior. The quest revolves around Soaring Eagle venturing across hostile lands to collect six sacred totems for his magic pouch to restore harmony. After conquering the initial six selectable levels, players must face a final test to defeat the dark forces threatening their tribe.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Borrowing the non-linear stage-select structure of the Mega Man franchise, players can tackle the first six elemental stages (such as the Ice Temple, Fire Test, and Water Woods) in any order. Soaring Eagle fights using a spear, featuring a highly versatile moveset. He can stab forward, thrust upward to catch airborne enemies, or execute a devastating downward plunge to bounce safely off hazards and foes alike. Defeating a stage boss unlocks a unique elemental weapon, such as the long-range Spear Wind, defensive Fire Web, or freeze-inducing Ice Dart. The game features excellent physics, rewarding players who master the timing of their aerial maneuvers. Additionally, players must collect gourds to replenish health and hunt for hidden medicine bottles that prevent instant death.

• Arrow Keys / D-Pad: Move left and right, climb trees, duck, and aim the spear vertically.
• Action Keys: Z Key to Attack (thrust spear) / X Key to Jump.
