Description

A Widget for all troubles! When Widget accidentally sends himself to Earth, he finds a whole planet-full of problems. Luckily, he can transform into many different shapes and fight the criminals who are trying to destroy Earth. As a Cannon, a Bird, a Dolphin, and more, Widget can tackle these fiends and finally face his own corrupt twin. Now join in the most dangerous, action-packed adventure a young Widget has ever faced!

Widget

Released in late 1992 by Atlus, Widget is a colorful action-platformer based on the popular environmentalist cartoon Widget the World Watcher. Players guide the titular purple alien hero on a mission to defend Earth from ecological devastation orchestrated by the villainous Mega-Brain and the mad scientist Dr. Dante. Spanning multiple hazard-filled stages—ranging from polluted tropical jungles to toxic industrial factories—the game serves as an overlooked gem in the NES library, blending Atlus’s signature challenging game design with bright, expressive 8-bit visuals that faithfully capture the spirit of the animated series.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The defining mechanic of Widget is the protagonist's ability to shapeshift. By collecting essential energy cells scattered throughout each stage, Widget can transform into five distinct forms, each critical for bypassing specific environmental obstacles and enemies. The Cannon form launches powerful ranged projectiles, the Rock Monster smashes heavy barricades, the Bird enables flight across treacherous chasms, the Dolphin navigates deep underwater trenches, and the Mouse shrinks Widget to slip through narrow passages. Managing the transformation meter is vital, as utilizing these forms drains energy. Players must constantly cycle through these abilities, balancing intense combat with platforming puzzles, while collecting health power-ups and avoiding hazards like toxic sludge and aggressive mutant creatures.
