When lonely ex-gladiator minotaur Kon gets butchered after a blind date, the Greek God of Meat, Gyros, offers him a chance at redemption. Placed back in the mortal world as a ghost minotaur, Kon must track down his tragically-sourced meat and put himself back together, all while solving the mystery of his untimely demise…

Originally conceptualized as a homebrew passion project before seeing official physical cartridges for the Nintendo Entertainment System, The Meating is a delightfully bizarre, dark-humored platformer. The storyline follows a hapless butcher who accidentally drops himself into his own industrial-grade meat grinder, transforming his spirit into a vengeful, sentient slab of steak. Tasked with navigating the surreal purgatory of the "Great Abattoir," players must fight their way through fleshy dungeons, processing plants, and bone-yard labyrinths to reclaim their mortal body from the demonic Butcher Supreme. Its meticulous pixel art blends classic 8-bit aesthetic with Cronenberg-esque body horror, creating a singularly unique atmospheric experience in the NES retro library.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The gameplay revolves around precision platforming and unique combat mechanics tailored to the protagonist's new, pliable state of existence. As a piece of meat, the main character cannot jump conventionally; instead, players must utilize a "Meat Slap" momentum mechanic, stretching and launching themselves across bottomless pits of boiling lard and grinding gears. Offensive moves include whipping enemies with greasy tendrils and launching bone fragments as ranged projectiles. Power-ups such as "Marinade" and "Meat Tenderizer" temporarily grant invincibility or enhanced smashing power. Featuring multi-tiered stages, hidden sausages to collect for extra lives, and unforgiving boss fights against mutant livestock, The Meating demands quick reflexes and strategic positioning reminiscent of classic titles like Castlevania meets Splatterhouse.
