Sinking Feeling

Overview & History

Released as an obscure homebrew title for the 8-bit Nintendo Entertainment System, Sinking Feeling pushes retro hardware to its atmospheric limits with a claustrophobic maritime premise. You control Barnaby, a Victorian salvage diver whose submarine implodes near a volatile ocean trench. With the surface miles above, Barnaby must navigate collapsing underwater caves, hydrothermal vents, and mutated abyssal fauna before his oxygen reserves hit zero. Developed by indie enthusiasts using authentic assembly code, the game gained a cult following among retrogaming purists for its bleak, Lovecraftian tone that starkly contrasts with the colorful palettes typical of the NES library.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Sinking Feeling combines platforming tension with resource management. Barnaby is encumbered by his heavy diving suit, giving him a distinct, momentum-heavy jump arc and a sluggish underwater trudge. The screen constantly scrolls downward as the sea floor gives way beneath you, requiring precision timing to avoid crushing stalactites and rising toxic sludge. Players must carefully manage the oxygen meter; while air bubbles scattered throughout the ruins offer brief reprieves, lingering too long invites deep-sea predators. Barnaby is equipped with a pneumatic harpoon gun for ranged combat against aggressive anglerfish and armored crustaceans, alongside a heavy wrench for melee strikes and cracking open sealed bulkheads. Hidden caverns offer oxygen tank upgrades, but detouring risks getting swallowed by the relentless abyss.
