Description

The city has been corrupted by drugs for some time. Johnny Thomas, a man who lost his mother and sister as a result of his father being used as an experiment for a new kind of drug, is the only man who opposes the drug syndicates. After the incident, Thomas left the corrupted police department he was working for and became a private secret agent in order to investigate the illegal trafficking routes in his city. During his investigation, he learns that an international criminal organization known as “Hawk” is responsible for the majority of the drugs that has sneaked into the country.

Somewhat more faithful to the plot of the movie than the first Spartan X game, it attempts to tell the same story: In Barcelona, Mr. X has captured the pickpocket Silvia. In order to get her back, Thomas, a Kung-Fu master who runs a restaurant must travel the city, eventually reaching Mr. X’s castle and attempt to rescue her.

Spartan X 2 is an expanded version of the original Spartan X game (aka Kung-Fu). Similar to that game, Spartan X 2 is a side-scrolling fighting game. Controlling Thomas, the player is able to move left and right, jump, kick and punch. Thomas has an energy bar and is defeated if he loses all of the energy. Some enemies drop items such as potions which will help replenish this bar. At the end of each level, Thomas encounters a boss.

Spartan X 2

Overview & History

Released exclusively in Japan in 1991 by Irem for the Famicom, Spartan X 2 is the obscure, highly sought-after sequel to the legendary arcade beat-'em-up known internationally as Kung-Fu Master. Unlike its predecessor which was loosely tied to the Jackie Chan film Wheels on Meals, this 8-bit console-exclusive sequel crafts an original, gritty crime-thriller narrative. Protagonist Thomas returns, trading his pagoda-climbing exploits for a modern urban warpath. Thomas must infiltrate a drug syndicate, battle his way through a speeding cargo train, an industrial harbor, and a heavily guarded skyscraper to rescue kidnapped hostages and avenge his fallen allies. Because it never saw an official North American or European release during the NES era, it remains a coveted hidden gem among retro collectors.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Spartan X 2 vastly expands upon the simplistic single-plane combat of the original game while retaining its punishing difficulty. Players traverse side-scrolling stages packed with diverse thugs, martial artists, and knife-wielding bosses who demand tactical spacing. Thomas boasts an upgraded repertoire of moves: alongside his standard high and low punches and kicks, he can unleash a devastating spinning kick and powerful jumping aerial attacks. The game introduces dynamic level hazards, destructible environments, and alternating stage designs—including a gripping sequence aboard a moving locomotive. Health pickups are scarce, meaning mastery of the rhythm of combat and enemy attack patterns is mandatory to survive each stage's grueling boss encounter.
