Description

An unreleased video game developed by Mark Lesser and Rex Bradford of Microsmiths that was produced for the NES. The game featured the sponsorship of the Reebok Pump shoe.

In the game the player controls the infamous Count Dracula who, while wearing Reebok Pumps, has to first work his way down his castle while avoiding the hostile villagers. This can be accomplished by hypnotizing the villagers with your vampiric gaze, or by pulling a lever to spring one of many Rube Goldberg-esque hidden traps.

Drac's Night Out

Overview & History

Developed as an ambitious, unreleased prototype for the Nintendo Entertainment System by Parker Brothers in 1989, Drac's Night Out is a fascinating piece of lost gaming history. While Universal Monsters titles were scarce on the 8-bit NES, this project aimed to blend cinematic horror with lighthearted platforming. Instead of fighting Van Helsing in a gothic castle, players control Count Dracula as he sneaks out of his crypt to explore a vibrant, neon-lit modern city, searching for midnight snacks and avoiding aggressive mortal mobs. Though canceled before its official retail debut due to shifting corporate priorities and licensing disputes, prototype ROMs surfaced years later, allowing retro enthusiasts to finally experience its unique brand of nocturnal mischief.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The game breaks away from linear action tropes by incorporating mild stealth and puzzle elements. Players navigate side-scrolling urban streets filled with flickering streetlights, cafes, and startled citizens. Dracula possesses a varied repertoire of supernatural abilities: he can morph into a swift bat to bypass high-rise obstacles, transform into a mist to drift through locked gates, and cast hypnotic gazes to pacify aggressive security guards. Health is managed through a "blood meter," which depletes if Dracula is exposed to streetlamps or attacked by mob-wielding villagers, forcing players to stealthily feed on unsuspecting pedestrians in dark alleyways to replenish vitality before sunrise.
