Overview & History

Released by SEGA in 1988, Juuouki—better known to Western audiences as Altered Beast—was ported to the Nintendo Entertainment System by Asmik Corporation in 1989. The storyline plunges players into ancient Greek mythology, casting you as a nameless Roman centurion resurrected from the dead by the supreme god Zeus. Your divine mission is to traverse the underworld and battle hordes of grotesque undead to rescue Zeus’s abducted daughter, Athena. Unlike the bustling arcade original renowned for its digitized speech and grander sprites, the NES port is a distinct technical achievement tailored to Nintendo's 8-bit architecture. It introduces unique level layouts, exclusive enemies like the subterranean worm bosses, and an atmospheric, stripped-down chiptune soundtrack composed by Tohru Nakabayashi, giving this console iteration its own distinct cult appeal.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The core gameplay is a side-scrolling beat-'em-up defined by the iconic transformation mechanic. As you progress through each of the five scrolling stages, you must defeat specific, glowing white two-headed wolves. Each slain beast yields a 'Spirit Ball' that upgrades your physical prowess. Collecting one ball enhances your muscle mass and punch speed; a second ball drastically increases your attack range. Snagging the third and final Spirit Ball triggers a visceral, screen-flashing transformation sequence that morphs the centurion into a mythical powerhouse. Players can transform into a Werewolf, a dual-element Dragon, a nimble Bear, a lightning-wielding Tiger, and a Golden Werewolf in the final boss rush. Each beast boasts devastating signature abilities, such as the Dragon's flight and electrical projectile or the Bear's petrification breath, which are essential for overwhelming stage bosses like Neff, the shapeshifting demon lord who taunts you between levels.
