ARKANOID-type spacefighter MIXTEC runs through long forgotten computer data until it finds the answer to this threat… VAUS 2 is launched and speeds towards the threatening alien presence, before it can extract its revenge… “Arkanoid II”!

Unlike the original game, the sequel was released only in Japan.

Overview & History

Released for the Nintendo Entertainment System by Taito in 1989, Arkanoid II: Revenge of DOH builds upon the foundation of the arcade classic while adapting it for home consoles. Unlike many straightforward ports, this NES iteration expands the sci-fi lore following the destruction of the Vaus spacecraft. Players once again assume the role of pilot VAUS, who must navigate through distorted space-time dimensions to confront the ultimate sentient entity, DOH. The game introduces intricate level layouts, new boss encounters, and a branching path system that alters your progression through the universe. Its vibrant, colorful 8-bit aesthetic and pulsing chiptune soundtrack capture the quintessential late-80s arcade atmosphere while offering a distinct console challenge.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Arkanoid II refines the traditional brick-breaking formula by introducing strategic elements, dangerous new enemy types, and a revamped capsule power-up system. Players control the paddle (the Vaus) at the bottom of the screen to deflect an energy ball and eradicate formations of space blocks. Hitting specific capsules releases modifying powers, denoted by single-letter codes: 'E' expands the paddle width, 'L' equips destructive laser cannons, 'S' slows the ball down, and 'C' allows the paddle to catch and hold the ball for precise aiming. A standout addition to this sequel is the warp zone mechanic; clearing levels swiftly unlocks portal choices, leading to distinct sector branches. Certain blocks require multiple hits or explode to clear adjacent obstacles, while relentless enemy ships constantly spawn to disrupt your trajectory and destroy your energy ball.
