In Ikki, players take the role of Gonbe (and his friend Tago if there is a second player), who are farmers living in medieval Japan. They are currently involved in an uprising against their feudal lord. The feudal lord has dispatched his army of ninjas to put a halt to this revolt.

Gameplay is viewed from a top down perspective. Players get to explore four different locations (stages) searching for gold coins (kobans) that are spread out across the land. Every gold coin has to be collected for the player to move on to the next stage. While searching for the coins, players have to deal with the enemy ninjas and other minions of the land who want to harm them. Players can defend themselves by throwing scythes at any incoming opponent. They can also pick up items such as a bamboo spear for an additional weapon, plus find items that can increase speed of movement, and an item that will give the player an extra life.

Released by Sunsoft for the Famicom in 1985 and later ported to the NES, Ikki is one of the most eccentric titles in early gaming history, often remembered as an affectionate yet bizarre historical farce. Set during the Edo period of feudal Japan, the storyline follows two exasperated and impoverished farmers, Gonbe and Denbei, who are driven to revolt against the tyrannical rule of their greedy local magistrate. Rather than wielding samurai swords or traditional weaponry, these humble agricultural workers must rely on a bamboo spear and their wits to survive an onslaught of villains ranging from greedy tax collectors and masked ninjas to aggressive Tengu bird-men. The game holds a legendary cult status in Japan as an early example of an isometric action-adventure that tackled historical peasant uprisings with tongue-in-cheek absurdity.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Ikki plays out across scrolling multi-directional maps where the primary objective is to collect a specific number of golden coins scattered throughout the sprawling feudal village and labyrinthine bamboo forests before time expires. Gonbe and Denbei can thrust their bamboo spears to defeat oncoming enemies or stun them, though direct combat is often secondary to frantic evasion and spatial management. Players must also collect hidden power-ups, such as folding fans that grant temporary invincibility, magical gourds, and hidden items that boost speed. The game uniquely supports two-player cooperative action, allowing both peasants to riot simultaneously. Despite its bright, charming pixel art, Ikki is notorious for its punishing difficulty, chaotic enemy spawn patterns, and unpredictable environmental hazards, earning its modern reputation as a delightfully frustrating retro classic.
