Description

A text adventure game based on the anime of the same name. In the 21st Century, 30 years after a devastating global nuclear war, mankind is once again on the brink of total annihilation. In a world populated by rival motorcycle gangs and petty politicians, a powerful psychic force, known only as ‘Akira,’ suddenly resurfaces in Neo-Tokyo

The player takes the role of Kaneda, who begins the game when his motorcycle gang is taken into police custody after the abduction of their friend Tetsuo by the military. Progress in the game is made by selecting actions from a list. The current location is depicted in a static image, often redrawn from the movie. Progress can be recorded with the help of passwords.

Akira

Overview & History

Released by Taito for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1988, Akira adapts Katsuhiro Otomo's landmark cyberpunk manga rather than just the animated film. Set in the dystopian ruins of Neo-Tokyo ahead of World War III, players step into the shoes of Kaneda, the rebellious leader of a biker gang. Kaneda must navigate a labyrinth of political conspiracies, military cover-ups, and mutated psychics to rescue his derailed friend Tetsuo, whose latent psychic powers are tearing the city apart. The game is infamous for its jarring genre shifts, alternating between first-person adventure investigation, side-scrolling brawling, and chaotic motorcycle chases.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard linear action titles of the 8-bit era, Akira functions as a graphic adventure hybrid. Progression requires players to talk to NPCs, select specific dialogue trees, and gather clues to advance the narrative, occasionally breaking up the sleuthing with traditional side-scrolling combat where Kaneda wields a metal pipe. Character moves are relatively basic due to the focus on investigation and storytelling; Kaneda can walk, examine environments, and execute standard melee strikes during confrontation sequences. The game also features tense vehicle segments where dodging obstacles is critical for survival. Due to its dense Japanese text and obscure puzzle logic, it remains one of the most enigmatic and uniquely structured cinematic tie-ins on the Famicom/NES library.
