Description

The king’s daughter is seriously ill, and the kingdom is plagued by monsters. The king needs you, the offspring of the brave warrior Mars, to go on a journey and to investigate the matter. During this investigation, you uncover a much more sinister plot and must face the dark forces of the world.

“Chaos World” allows you to customize your character by choosing one of the several classes, gender, and statistics (you can allocate available skill points at your wish in the beginning of the game). Up to fourteen characters can join your party, and you can recruit people in adventurer guilds. The game also features a day/night cycle.

Chaos World

Overview & History

Released exclusively in Japan in 1991 by Natsume for the Famicom, Chaos World is an ambitious, late-era role-playing game that blends traditional top-down exploration with Greek and Norse mythological elements. The storyline centers around a world plunged into darkness by the malevolent deity Chaos, prompting a band of diverse heroes to embark on a sprawling quest across multiple realms to retrieve sacred artifacts and restore cosmic balance.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard linear RPGs of its era, Chaos World introduces a distinct non-linear structure, allowing players to choose different starting paths and recruit varied party members with unique special abilities. Combat transitions from the overworld exploration into a tactical, turn-based battle screen where positioning, elemental spells, and physical strikes dictate victory. Characters possess specific move sets, including devastating combo attacks and area-of-effect magical incantations that consume precious Mana points. Visually, the game pushes the NES hardware with remarkably detailed sprite work, dynamic enemy designs, and a memorable, atmospheric soundtrack composed by Hiroyuki Iwatsuki.
