This game is a port of the original Arcade version and was released exclusively in Japan.
This version features several substantial differences from the Arcade version. The player now has a health gauge and can take more than one hit before losing a life (which can be replenished by picking up hearts). However, some of the enemy grunts now take more than one slice to defeat as well. The player can now purchase all weapon power-ups in item shops, which can be changed through a sub-menu. The stages are different and the bosses include new foes such as Frankenstein’s monster and a giant octopus. The player can enter houses and rooms where an old lady will offer advice to the player (such as an enemy’s weak point). However, some of the old ladies the player will encounter are hostile and will bring a curse to the player (like reducing his health by half). The ending varies depending on whether the player used a continue to finish the game.

Released by Data East for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1988 (following its original arcade debut), Captain Silver is a swashbuckling side-scrolling platformer that casts players in the role of Jim, a young adventurer determined to hunt down the infamous pirate King Gold and rescue his grandfather. Unlike the arcade version's vertical-scrolling design, the NES adaptation completely reimagines the adventure into a horizontal action-platformer. While it was initially developed by Tokuma Shoten Intermedia in Japan, its quirky blend of high-seas swashbuckling and mythological beast-slaying gained a cult following among retro enthusiasts for its unforgiving difficulty and vibrant 8-bit aesthetic.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Players traverse five treacherous stages—ranging from haunted docks to dense jungles and eerie pirate ships—armed primarily with a trusty sword. However, combat relies heavily on collecting hidden treasure bags left behind by defeated foes. These coins serve as currency at shops scattered across the stages, allowing Jim to purchase permanent health upgrades, stronger armor, and specialized weapons like throwing daggers or boomerangs. Platforming precision is paramount, as tricky enemy placement, moving platforms, and relentless timers demand absolute mastery of Jim's movement. Boss encounters at the end of each stage test the player's reflexes against screen-filling monstrosities, requiring precise sword strikes and careful positioning to survive.
