Description

Hokuto no Ken is a side-scrolling beat-em-up based on the anime series of the same name. The player controls Kenshiro, the series’ main character, trying to rescue his girlfriend Julia. Advancing from right to left there will be various doors that can be entered. At some of those doors Julia’s image is visible, which points out the correct way to go. Other than entering doors, Kenshiro will be busy punching and kicking punk-like enemies that attack up close or with projectiles. The game features gory animation for the deaths of your foes: their heads get torn away from the bodies and explode.

Hokuto no Ken

Overview & History

Released by Toei Animation for the Famicom in 1986, Hokuto no Ken (Fist of the North Star) adapts Buronson and Tetsuo Hara's brutal post-apocalyptic manga into a side-scrolling action title. Famously localized and heavily altered in North America as Vigilante's spiritual cousin, Black Belt, the original Japanese version retains its gruesome identity, complete with the iconic head-exploding aftermath of Kenshiro’s assassinations. Set in a wasteland devastated by nuclear war, the storyline follows the rightful successor of Hokuto Shinken on a grim quest to rescue his kidnapped fiancée, Yuria, from his treacherous former brother-in-arms, Shin, battling leather-clad thugs and martial arts masters across gritty urban ruins.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard beat-em-ups, this title relies on a distinct power progression mechanic. Kenshiro begins each stage in a standard weak state, utilizing basic punches and kicks against relentless waves of Mohawk-sporting punks. Defeating specific glowing or minor enemies builds up Kenshiro's 'Star' meter at the bottom of the screen. Once fully charged, players can unleash the lethal Hokuto Shinken technique—hitting a boss or major enemy forces them to swell and violently explode after a short delay. Stages transition from standard side-scrolling brawling to intense, one-on-one boss duels against series staples like Shin, Devil Rebirth, and Amiba, demanding precise timing, ducking, and jumping over projectile spam.
