Mappy Kids

Overview & History

Released exclusively in Japan in 1989 by Namco for the Family Computer (Famicom), Mappy Kids is a delightfully quirky platform sequel to the classic arcade cat-and-mouse chase. Diverging from the fixed-screen vertical maze mechanics of its predecessor, this installment shifts into a sprawling, side-scrolling domestic comedy. The storyline follows our heroic police mouse, Mappy, whose wife and mischievous twin sons, Junior and Goro, demand a lavish new mansion and expensive furnishings. Forced into becoming a dedicated provider, Mappy must hustle through suburban neighborhoods collecting money bags, answering payphones, and dodging the perennial feline menace, Goro (the boss cat), and his Meowky underlings. Because it never saw an official Western localization, it remains a beloved, albeit slightly surreal, hidden gem of the late-80s Famicom library.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike the original arcade game, Mappy Kids incorporates light RPG and economic simulation elements. Each stage challenges Mappy to earn a specific target amount of currency before time runs out. Money is gathered by collecting scattered coins, cracking open safes, or successfully completing mini-games. Players navigate multi-tiered platform levels using a unique weight and momentum system. Mappy can jump, punch enemies with boxing gloves, and interact with household appliances like trampolines and vacuum tubes for rapid transit. Health is tracked via a stamina bar, and players can purchase upgraded items—ranging from skateboards to protective armor—at shops using their hard-earned cash. The chaotic two-player cooperative mode adds frantic replayability as players compete or collaborate to fulfill the ultimate domestic dream.
