Description

The city of Palma has always been protected by the spirits of the four elements. However, Dolgo, the spirit of the earth, revolts and makes off with the Life Seeker, the controller of the world’s life energies, to his underground lair. In doing so, the people of Palma begin to lose their very souls. The spirit of the air has ordered that a champion needs to be found, to retrieve the Life Seeker from the clutches of Dolgo. You are that champion.

Zombie Hunter is an action role-playing game, somewhat similar to Zelda II with its side-scrolling battles. You receive experience from defeating your enemies and you have an inventory complete with armor and weapons.

Zombie Hunter

Overview & History

Released in Japan for the Family Computer (Famicom) in 1987 by HAL Laboratory, Zombie Hunter is a bizarre, lesser-known action-RPG that preceded the massive zombie craze of modern gaming. Unlike standard linear platformers of the 8-bit era, this title attempted an ambitious blend of top-down exploration and side-scrolling combat. Though it never received an official Western localization during its prime, it remains a fascinating cult curio for retro collectors interested in early console horror experiments.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The storyline drops players into a grim, post-apocalyptic wasteland overrun by the undead, where you control a rugged survivor on a quest to rescue his kidnapped girlfriend. The game shifts perspectives dynamically: players navigate an overhead world map to explore desolate ruins and enter hazardous dungeons, which then transition into side-scrolling action stages. Combat relies heavily on resource management; your protagonist starts with a standard melee weapon but must scavenge for and intelligently deploy firearms, Molotov cocktails, and temporary health tonics to survive relentless hordes of ghouls, mutants, and terrifying boss anomalies. Navigation requires careful backtracking, as certain doors and gateways are locked behind specific keys hidden deep within dangerous sector mazes.
