Description

The game is set in a pre-historic environment, complete with cavemen and dinosaurs. You play as a little boy who has to collect treasure without being killed by those ferocious creatures. The only thing you can do to immobilize the enemies is setting a trap right before they approach you. This gives you an opportunity to gain some valuable time. The enemies will pop out of the traps a few seconds later. The game is divided into levels with increasing difficulty. At each level, your goal is to collect all the treasure before you can proceed. You die if you allow an enemy to touch you.

Released by Nichibutsu in 1987 as a Family Computer (Famicom) port of their lesser-known arcade game *Kid no Omocha Bako*, *Booby Kids* is a quirky, fast-paced single-screen platformer. The storyline follows a mischievous young boy named Kakun, who must navigate surreal, clockwork-like maze environments to rescue his kidnapped grandfather from a band of zany extraterrestrials. While the game missed out on a simultaneous Western release on the original NES, it remains a cult classic among retrogaming enthusiasts for its whimsical aesthetic and distinct maze-clearing mechanics that blend elements of *Bomberman* with vertical trap-setting.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard platformers where jumping is used to clear obstacles, *Booby Kids* gives players the unique ability to dig holes into the ground directly to their left and right. This mechanic serves a dual purpose: excavating hidden power-ups, bonus items, and exit stairs, while also trapping pursuing alien enemies who fall into the pits. Once an enemy is trapped inside a hole, Kakun can quickly fill it back in to permanently defeat them before they manage to climb out. The game spans multiple increasingly difficult stages, each requiring precise timing and strategic route planning to avoid dead ends while collecting all necessary items to open the level exit.
