Description

Several years ago, a gigantic island arose from the southern Atlantic Ocean due to sudden shifts on the Earth’s surface. Numerous adventurers made their way to the island to investigate, but none of them were able to return home safely. This island was named Atlantis, and nobody approached it out of fear. The game’s main character is an amateur adventurer named Wynn, who decides to go to the island after learning that his master disappeared on the island over half a year ago. Armed with the special dynamite invented by the master, Wynn heads over to Atlantis all by himself to face an evil emperor who seeks to revive an ancient empire.

Atlantis no Nazo

Overview & History

Released by Sunsoft in 1986 for the Family Computer, Atlantis no Nazo (The Mystery of Atlantis) is an infamous 2D side-scrolling platformer drenched in Famicom-era brutality. Players control a rogue archaeologist named Wynn who drops into a massive, multi-tiered underground ruin consisting of precisely 100 interconnected zones. The game's overarching premise sends Wynn on a quest to conquer this perilous labyrinth to rescue a captured king and unlock the legendary secrets of the sunken continent. Though it never saw an official North American NES release, it achieved cult-status in Japan for its punishing difficulty, non-linear routing, and notorious final zone that trapped unwary players in endless loops if they failed to meet hyper-specific conditions.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Wynn is fundamentally fragile; he has no health bar and dies instantly upon touching any enemy, projectile, hazard, or bottomless pit. To survive the labyrinth, Wynn relies strictly on hurling explosive dynamite sticks to obliterate erratic foes like bats, jumping fish, and floating skulls, while navigating crumbling blocks and elevators. The game’s core hook lies in its labyrinthine structure: screens loop horizontally, and specific zones house hidden warp doors that can rocket Wynn forward by dozens of stages or throw him backward into backtracking nightmares. Mastery of the game demands absolute precision over Wynn's momentum, as well as an encyclopedic knowledge of which blocks conceal vital hidden items or sudden death traps.

Keyboard Controls

  • Arrow Keys / D-Pad: Move Wynn left and right, duck, or look up
  • Action Keys: A to Jump, B to Throw Dynamite
  • Enter: Start / Pause
