Description

Gallus and his demonic force of youkai are invading Earth. Only Akira with his unique ESP gift has the ability to stop this invasion. Youkai Club is an action game which consists of six stages with each stage ending with a boss that must be defeated.

Akira can jump and crouch and initially comes equipped with his Psycho Stinger throwing knives that he can use on his enemies. Akira has a power meter which lets him take multiple attacks from enemies. Akira also has an experience bar that can be slowly filled by EXP balls dropped from defeated enemies or by collecting an EXP book which will add a lot more experience compared to the EXP balls. Collecting enough experience will increase Akira’s attack power,

Akira can find items such as flashlights which can temporarily freeze enemies and bombs which will destroy any enemy in its vicinity. Other items include shooting stars items which increases Akira’s speed and medicine which gives Akira temporary invincibility.

The game follows a young, brave schoolboy named Zenkichi who must rescue his kidnapped friends from an underworld menagerie of mythical Japanese spirits, demons, and ghouls known as youkai. Distinguished by its surprisingly eerie atmosphere, vibrant pixel art depicting classic yōkai like tengu and kappa, and an authentic chiptune soundtrack utilizing traditional Japanese musical scales, it remains a cult classic of the 8-bit era that blends whimsical supernatural dread with frantic arcade-style platforming.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Zenki traverses side-scrolling stages divided into distinct thematic realms inspired by Japanese mythology. Unlike standard platform heroes restricted to basic jumping, Zenkichi is armed with a magical paper ofuda charm that he flings like a boomerang to exorcise approaching spirits. Players must master precise aerial maneuvering, as enemy hitboxes are unforgiving and platforms frequently shift or crumble. Collecting hidden candles and sacred scrolls scattered throughout each level powers up Zenkichi's attack range and grants temporary invulnerability against relentless minibosses. At the climax of each stage, players face screen-filling traditional folklore beasts requiring tactical pattern-memorization to defeat before time runs out. The level design emphasizes verticality, hidden warp doors, and environmental hazard dodging over simple button-mashing combat.
