Description

The console version of Wit’s, while playing very similarly to the arcade version, still has a few slight overall differences. While the arcade version has you progress through 99 levels, the console version has, much like the Mega Man series, a stage select screen where you choose the opponent you’re to face off against. Each of the five initial levels consists of five rounds and features a different gameplay gimmick that you’ll have to master. In addition to the single player game, the game also features various multiplayer modes for up to four players.

Developed by Athena and released exclusively in Japan for the Famicom in 1989, Wit's is a fascinating and obscure puzzle-action hybrid that takes cues from arcade classics like Solomon's Key. The storyline thrusts players into a surreal, metaphysical labyrinth where twin heroes must outwit monolithic entities and spectral tricksters to restore order to a shattered dimension. While it never received an official Western localization during the 8-bit era, the game has since gained a cult following among retro collectors for its devilish isometric-perspective design, atmospheric chiptune soundtrack, and demanding cognitive challenges that separate it from standard side-scrolling platformers of the late '80s.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike traditional action titles, Wit's heavily prioritizes spatial awareness and strategic tile manipulation. Players navigate a series of floating, grid-based platforms suspended in a void. The core gameplay loop revolves around collecting glowing orbs while avoiding or trapping bizarre, relentless enemies. Your characters possess a signature magical beam that can alter the environment—creating, destroying, or pushing specific blocks to alter enemy pathfinding and forge safe pathways across dizzying chasms. Levels are timed, forcing players to balance quick-witted puzzle solving with rapid platforming execution. As you progress, the game introduces moving hazards, disappearing bridges, and teleporters that demand flawless memorization and split-second reflexes to conquer.
