Description

Originally slated for release in 1991, Bio Force Ape allows you to play as a pet chimpanzee who must rescue his family by taking the mysterious Bio Force serum and mutating into a pro wrestler. It was the recipient of an extremely positive profile in Nintendo Power — “extremely positive” being NP‘s default setting back in the day — but then vanished, presumably never to be seen again. The archivists at Lost Levels not only acquired the long-lost prototype cartridge, but uploaded a playable version of it to the Internet.

Bio Force Ape

Overview & History

Developed by SETA Corporation and originally slated for an official North American release on the Nintendo Entertainment System around 1992, Bio Force Ape (known in Japan as Clutch Hitter) became one of the holy grails of retro gaming lore. For decades, the game was considered entirely vaporware until a pristine, working prototype cartridge surfaced by pure luck, astonishing collectors and NES historians alike. The game tells the bizarre, sci-fi storyline of a genetically altered chimpanzee named Gen, who must violently tear through an alien stronghold and rescue his kidnapped human family from a tyrannical extraterrestrial overlord. Despite its surprisingly polished engine, vibrant 8-bit sprites, and an incredible chiptune soundtrack composed by Naoki Kodaka, publisher concerns over the shifting console generations led to its cancellation just shy of mass production. Today, it stands as a fascinating time capsule of late-era NES software development.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Bio Force Ape breaks away from standard side-scrolling platformer conventions by implementing a frantic, momentum-driven pace akin to Ninja Gaiden fused with Strider. Players control Gen as he traverses hazardous industrial and alien levels filled with relentless biomechanical enemies. Unlike typical platforming protagonists restricted to basic jumps and punches, Gen utilizes a diverse moveset that includes scaling walls, executing rapid mid-air somersaults, and unleashing a devastating tail-swipe attack. A standout gameplay mechanic is the "Rage Gauge," which fills up as Gen absorbs damage from enemies, eventually allowing him to transform into a temporarily invincible, hyper-aggressive berserker state capable of clearing entire screens of hazards. The level design heavily encourages vertical exploration, featuring hidden alcoves, timed platforming sequences, and intense boss battles that test the player's spatial awareness and reaction times to their absolute limits.
