Babel no Tou (Tower of Babel) is a platform puzzle game in which the player controls Indiana Borgnine, an archaeologist in search of the air gardens of Babylon. The only path to the gardens lies through the intimidating sixty-four floors of the famous Tower of Babel.

The hero must escape the various rooms of the biblical structure while collecting treasure. Each room is a separate puzzle, where the main objective is to pick up and stack L-shaped building blocks to construct stairs or bridges and reach the exit door. In each of these rooms, the player has a limited number of times that they can pick up these building blocks. The player must also avoid touching roaming enemies like flying bats, golems and the priest guards. When the explorer gets stuck or the level is made unsolvable by a series of wrong actions, a button can be used to kill the main character and reset the room.

Unlike standard arcade ports of the era, this Famicom exclusive was designed from the ground up to test spatial reasoning and long-term planning, rather than pure twitch reflexes. The game’s distinct vertical progression, muted color palettes, and hauntingly atmospheric chiptune melodies create a sense of ancient isolation. Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The core objective of *Babel no Tou* is deceptively simple: guide Dr. Prometheus from the base of a stage to the glowing exit door at the top. However, doing so requires manipulating an intricate grid of moveable blocks, disappearing tiles, ladders, and teleportation pads. Prometheus is armed with a limited supply of mystical magic wands (or blocks) that he can conjure horizontally or vertically to bridge gaps, build makeshift stairs, or trap wandering guardian monsters. Every single screen is a self-contained diorama requiring meticulous block management; placing a block in the wrong spot can permanently trap the player in an unwinable state, forcing a manual restart. Enemies patrol the platforms, adding a layer of strategic timing as players must frequently outmaneuver or wall off aggressive beasts while simultaneously constructing their architectural path upward across dozens of increasingly labyrinthine floors.
