In the 22nd century, mankind has begun to emigrate into outer space. Constructed at a lagrange point were three huge space colonies: the Isis Cluster (two artificial biospheres, named Land-1 and Land-2, and a satellite). Lagrange Point

Overview & History

Released exclusively in Japan in 1991 by Konami, *Lagrange Point* stands as a monumental achievement in the Famicom's twilight years, largely due to its custom VRC7 sound chip that delivered an astonishing 6-channel FM synthesis soundtrack. Set in the 22nd century, the sci-fi storyline unfolds on the massive space colony Frontier, which has been violently taken over by a deranged bio-computer named Biometal. Players assume the role of a courageous protagonist named Patch, who teams up with a rebellious rock musician named Greta and a resistance fighter named Carl to infiltrate the hostile colony, liberate its captive citizens, and dismantle Biometal’s tyrannical regime across various star-faring sectors.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard linear RPGs of its era, *Lagrange Point* blends top-down exploration with fast-paced, real-time side-scrolling action sequences reminiscent of *Zelda II* and *Blaster Master*. As players traverse the massive space habitats, they engage in seamless combat switching between close-quarters melee weapons and ranged firearms. A standout mechanic is the weapon crafting and modification system; by gathering various elemental raw materials scattered throughout the environment, players can fuse and upgrade their arsenal at workshops to create devastating elemental weaponry capable of exploiting specific enemy vulnerabilities. Characters utilize unique basic attacks and specialized tech moves tied to energy meters. The game also features a dynamic party system where you can swap active members on the fly, utilizing their distinct combat stats and traversal abilities to solve environmental puzzles, navigate labyrinthine space stations, and survive harrowing boss encounters against biomechanical monstrosities.
