The Terminator loosely follows the plot of the 1984 Arnold Schwarzenegger film. The game begins in the future, where the hero Kyle Reese must battle through a post-apocalyptic future in order to go back in time to 1984 Los Angeles. Once there, he must progress through various checkpoints as outlined by the main movie plot: Find Sarah Connor, shootout at the police station, and the climax in the factory. The main levels of the game consist of side-scrolling jumping and shooting action. In between levels are car chases where the Terminator attempts to run you down as you race to your next destination.

Released by Mindscape in 1992 and developed by Radical Entertainment, The Terminator for the Nintendo Entertainment System adapts James Cameron’s iconic 1984 sci-fi thriller. Unlike the more common LJN adaptations, this NES version is a gritty, side-scrolling action-platformer that puts players directly into the shoes of Kyle Reese. Sent back through time from a desolate, post-apocalyptic future ruled by Skynet, your mission is to protect Sarah Connor from the relentless cyborg assassin sent to erase humanity's last hope. The game captures the bleak atmosphere of the movie through stark color palettes, industrial soundscapes, and challenging combat encounters across multiple Los Angeles locations.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The game splits its progression between intense vehicular segments and traditional platforming levels. Players navigate Kyle Reese through gritty alleyways, seedy motels, and futuristic rubble while managing health and limited ammunition. Unlike standard run-and-gun titles, Kyle moves with a deliberate, slightly heavy momentum, making precise jumps and tactical retreats essential for survival. Combat involves wielding pistols, shotguns, and explosive pipe bombs against street thugs, police officers, and heavily armored Endoskeletons. Boss encounters against the Terminator require pattern recognition and exploiting environmental hazards. If you take too much damage, you must scramble to find medical supplies or face a brutal "Game Over" screen that plunges humanity into eternal darkness.
