Description

The player controls a pilot who is trying to defend the Earth from an evil nation’s global revolution sometime in the year 20XX. Given the assignment, the overall purpose of the game is to infiltrate their base and take out their defences and army, and then kill their leader. Enemies include a series of battle stations, various groups of aircraft, barriers, cargo planes, mechs, and other assorted enemies. Volguard II was a modified high-mobility combat mecha developed by the distant ancestors.

Volguard II

Overview & History

Released exclusively in Japan in 1987 by Bakeru Corporation for the Family Computer (Famicom), Volguard II is the cult-classic sequel to boot developer DB Soft's earlier computer title. Unlike typical vertical or horizontal scrolling shooters of its era, this sci-fi mecha epic combines overhead free-roaming exploration with intense arena combat. The storyline plunges players into a desperate planetary defense against an invading alien armada, tasking you with piloting the titular modular transforming robot to infiltrate heavily fortified alien strongholds, rescue captive pilots, and neutralize the supreme mechanical overlord before Earth falls.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Volguard II distinguishes itself through a deeply tactical dual-form mechanic. Players begin each stage navigating tight, labyrinthine bases on foot or in a nimble humanoid mech mode, carefully dodging enemy fire while blasting structural barriers. Scattered throughout the maze are modular components that allow you to dock and physically transform Volguard into a high-speed jet fighter, shifting the gameplay perspective into an aggressive aerial assault. Managing your limited energy reserves and fuel is vital; neglecting either forces a vulnerable ejection where you must survive on foot as a tiny pilot until you can recall your primary chassis. Upgradable weaponry, hidden energy pods, and multi-tiered mazes require both sharp reflexes and spatial memorization to conquer its unforgiving difficulty curve.
