Description

Chack’n Pop is considered a predecessor of Bubble Bobble. It is a platform game where a roundish yellow creature, named Chack’n, must fight against Monstas and Mightas in order to reclaim hearts that were stolen during a romantic encounter with Miss Chack’n.

The Monstas themselves hatch from eggs hanging from the ceilings and the Mightas push a rock that is used as the game’s timer. The Monsta eggs have three phases: if it’s blue, it’s completely harmless, if it’s yellow it will pop within 10 seconds and if an egg turns red it will pop almost immediately.

Chack’n uses bombs to blow up the Monstas and their eggs and he also uses them to release the captured hearts from their cages. When the heart is released, it will fly up and destroy the separator block and reveal the exit to the level.

Most versions of the game contain 14 levels to play through, however the Famicom version only includes 9.

Overview & History

Long before Taito birthed the iconic *Bubble Bobble*, they released Chack'n Pop in Japanese arcades in 1983, later making its way to the Family Computer (Famicom) and North American NES in the late 1980s. Serving as the conceptual precursor to Bub and Bob's adventures, this platform-puzzle hybrid stars Chack'n, a yellow, bipedal creature shaped like a clenched fist with large eyes. The storyline is delightfully quirky: Chack'n must rescue the gentle heart-shaped fairies, known as Mon-Mon, who have been captured and imprisoned in cages at the top of each single-screen stage by the villainous, thieving sketch-monsters called Mightas. Navigating this labyrinth requires both swift reflexes and tactical route-planning to clear each maze before a timer runs out and unleashes the dreaded invulnerable ghost, Skullobee.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard platformers where you jump freely, Chack'n Pop forces you to master its unique vertical-scrolling mechanics. Chack'n cannot actually jump high; instead, he relies on walking along ceilings and floors, and deploying floating bombs to blast through the environment. The primary weapon is a pair of explosive bombs that Chack'n drops behind or throws forward, which slowly inflate before detonating. These explosions are essential for destroying the eggs dropped by Mightas before they hatch into walking monsters, as well as freeing the trapped Mon-Mon hearts. Furthermore, grabbing items like the heart bonus or the elusive Invincibility Drink temporarily alters the gameplay rhythm, adding a layer of score-chasing urgency to every hazard-filled screen.
