Description

The title character, Challenger, is an archaeologist who seeks to rescue the princess, Maria, from the hands of the evil boss, Don Waldorado, in the land called Pleasio Land. The setting of the character as an archaeologist is an homage to the Indiana Jones franchise, while his name may be an allusion to Conan Doyle’s Professor Challenger (best known for his appearance in The Lost World).

One of Hudson Soft’s earliest NES titles, Challenger is an arcade-style game that combines side scrolling, run ‘n jump action with overhead, exploratory gameplay. The game consists of two parts.

The first level (or “scene”) has you racing the clock to get to the front of a train, where a purple-faced villain is holding your significant other (or, perhaps just some anonymous princess). You have at your disposal a trusty throwing knife to take care of enemies. You will also have to dodge obstacles and jump gaps in the train. This section is taken from the earlier Hudson game, Stop the Express.

Scene 2 places you in an overhead, maze-like environment, where you once again have to fight the clock. This time though, you have to navigate your way through the area, in search of all the different “keywords”, which are placed in different caves. Once you have cleared all the caves, the path will be open to the boss’ final lair.

Challenger

Overview & History

Released by Hudson Soft in 1985 for the Famicom, *Challenger* is an ambitious, multi-genre early NES-era title that cast players as the intrepid archaeologist and secret agent, Dr. Challenger. Loosely inspired by Arthur Conan Doyle’s Professor Challenger and pop-culture icons like Indiana Jones, the game's official narrative tasks Challenger with rescuing the royal Princess Maria from the clutches of the evil space pirate Don Wilder and his shadow syndicate. Developmentally, Hudson Soft sought to break away from single-screen arcade loops by dividing the experience into four radically distinct stages, moving from side-scrolling platforming to overhead maze-navigation and precise top-down vehicular combat. Although it never received an official North American NES release, it remains a fascinating cultural artifact of early console experimentation.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The core gameplay is notoriously unforgiving, split across four repeating phases. Stage 1 takes place aboard a moving passenger train where players leap across roof cars while dodging hostile guards and flying birds, ultimately collecting a key to enter the next area. Stage 2 shifts to a top-down, multi-tiered maze inside a cavernous fortress filled with deadly rolling boulders, traps, and wandering mercenaries. Stage 3 requires navigating a treacherous, scrolling ocean view on a floating raft to reach the pirate island. Finally, Stage 4 transitions into Don Wilder's castle, where Challenger must systematically plant explosives in specific rooms to eradicate the villain while armed with throwing daggers. Defeating enemies requires precise timing, as Challenger can only attack horizontally with his knife, making vertical alignment and jump-arcs critical for survival.
