Description

Go Nagai’s Devilman comes to life in this graphic and text action-adventure game for the Famicom/NES. High atop the Himalayas, ancient devils are stirring beneath the ice after ten thousand years of imprisonment. Archdemon Xenon, their four-faced master unleashes them upon the Earth much to the chagrin of humanity. You are Akira Fudo who combines with a powerful ancient demon named Amon to become Devilman! Six levels of fire, ice, water, secret demon research labs, Tokyo ruins, and much more to explore as Devilman, Akira, his friends, or girlfriend Miki!

Devilman

Overview & History

Released by Namco in 1989 exclusively for the Japanese Famicom, Devilman adapts Go Nagai’s legendary dark fantasy manga into an unapologetically bleak, side-scrolling action platformer. Unlike many NES adaptations of the era that sanitized their source material, this game embraces the occult terror, body horror, and apocalyptic dread of the original series. Players control Akira Fudo, a teenage boy who merges with the demon Amon to become Devilman—humanity's reluctant savior against an encroaching demonic invasion. The game is infamous for its relentless difficulty, moody atmosphere, and an uncompromising structure that mirrors the tragic narrative arc of the manga, culminating in grueling encounters against the Lord of Darkness, Satan, and his demonic generals.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The core gameplay loop alternates between side-scrolling platforming stages and pseudo-3D maze exploration. As normal human Akira, players are physically weak and vulnerable, relying on basic kicks and punches. However, scattered throughout the levels are soul orbs that allow Akira to transform into Devilman. In his demonic form, his mobility increases dramatically, enabling him to leap higher and execute devastating aerial attacks. Combat relies heavily on Devilman's signature projectiles—the 'Devil Cutter' energy blades—and close-range claw slashes. A unique resource mechanic ties your demonic power to your 'Humanity' meter; taking too much damage or staying in demon form too long risks consuming Akira's soul, leading to an instant 'Game Over' that symbolizes ultimate possession by Amon. The level design requires precise timing over bottomless pits, careful management of health pickups, and memorization of enemy spawn points, making every screen a brutal test of reflexes and endurance.
