Description

In DoorDoor, players take on the role of Chun. Chun’s goal is to trap four different enemy alien types behind doors.

DoorDoor is a platform game in which Chun has to lock up the alien creatures that pursue him. Chun can attempt to lock as many aliens as he can behind each door that is available on a particular stage. Chun can slide open a door, wait for the alien(s) to enter and then he has to quickly shut the door, because if he waits to long the captured aliens will walk out and pursue him again. Each stage is completed when all the enemy aliens are trapped behind doors.

Door Door

Overview & History

Released by Chunsoft in 1983 for the PC-8801 before receiving its iconic Famicom (NES) port in July 1984, Door Door holds a monumental place in gaming history as the very first title developed by Koichi Nakamura, the visionary behind Dragon Quest. The game introduces a charmingly bizarre storyline featuring a cute alien protagonist named "Amenbo," who must navigate abstract, maze-like stages to trap invading lifeforms known as "Gulics." Unlike standard platformers of the era, Door Door blends puzzle-solving with strategic movement, requiring players to manipulate their environment rather than relying solely on traditional combat or jumping maneuvers.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The core gameplay revolves around clearing single-screen stages by eliminating all moving enemies. Amenbo cannot directly attack foes; instead, players must lure the pursuing Gulics into doorways strategically placed across the walls, floors, and ceilings. Once an enemy enters a door, Amenbo can slam it shut to transform them into a rolling sphere, which can then be kicked across the screen to crush other obstacles or enemies. Additionally, Amenbo features a unique gravity-defying movement mechanic that allows him to walk up walls and crawl along ceilings, entirely changing how players traverse the enclosed playfield. As you progress, enemies evolve into faster, more aggressive variants, demanding precise timing, spatial awareness, and meticulous route planning to survive.
