Description

Doraemon is an action game based on the popular children’s cartoon of the same name. As the eponymous blue robot cat, the player must rescue each of his friends who have been kidnapped. Much like Hudson’s earlier title Challenger, each stage plays differently from the others.

In the first stage, Doraemon must explore a large top-view overworld. There are open manholes and “dokodemo Doors” that lead to various places and to side-scrolling areas. The goal is to find the proper path through the stage and to rescue Nobita. The second stage is a side-scrolling shooting stage, where Doraemon must make his way through three areas in order to rescue Suneo and Gian. The third and final stage is an underwater maze where Doraemon must collect various items and get help from his other friends in order to rescue Shizuka.

There are numerous items to be found throughout the game that will increase Doraemon’s abilities, including increasing his maximum health (which can be refilled be collecting his favorite food Dorapan) and enhancing his offensive capabilities.

Doraemon

Overview & History

Released by Hudson Soft in December 1986 for the Famicom, Doraemon is an early platform-action title adapted from Fujiko F. Fujio's legendary manga and anime franchise. While the cat-robot hero is globally iconic today, this Famicom release was one of the earliest digital explorations of his futuristic gadget-filled universe. The plot revolves around a catastrophe caused by the evil alien Boss, who captures Doraemon and scatters his beloved futuristic gadgets across space and time. Nobita, Gian, Suneo, and Shizuka must step up to rescue their robotic friend and recover the missing items.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The game is uniquely structured into three distinct eras—the prehistoric world, the Arabian Nights era, and the far-future world—each split into action-platforming stages and side-scrolling shooter segments. In the platforming sections, players control Nobita, navigating hazards while collecting Jam (food) to trade with Doraemon's sister, Dorami, for vital gadgets. However, combat is unconventional: Nobita starts completely defenseless and must rely on finding specific gadgets like the Air Cannon, Shingata Boushi (Invisibility Hat), or the Time Belt to fight off enemies. The gameplay completely shifts for the second half of each world, transitioning into a horizontal shoot-'em-up where players pilot Doraemon's famous Time Machine to blast alien fleets in fast-paced aerial combat. Defeating bosses requires utilizing specific gadget combinations collected during the terrestrial exploration phases, blending puzzle-solving with classic 8-bit action.
