Released exclusively in Japan in 1990 by Epoch for the Famicom, Doraemon: Giga Zombie no Gyakushū (The Revenge of Giga Zombie) is an ambitious role-playing game based on the beloved Fujiko F. Fujio manga and anime franchise. Departing from the standard platformers of its era, the title thrusts players into a time-traveling epic inspired by the 1989 animated feature film *Doraemon: Nobita and the Birth of Japan*. The narrative centers around the nefarious villain Giga Zombie, who attempts to alter historical epochs and conquer the timeline. Nobita and his cosmic cat companion Doraemon must assemble their loyal friends—Shizuka, Gian, and Suneo—to traverse prehistoric eras, ancient civilizations, and futuristic landscapes. As one of the more mechanically complex Famicom RPGs, it blended traditional turn-based combat with clever spatial puzzles that required deep utilization of Doraemon’s iconic futuristic gadgets.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The game operates from a top-down perspective, combining traditional JRPG exploration with signature Doraemon elements. Players navigate overworld maps and labyrinthine dungeons while engaging in random-encounter, turn-based battles against Giga Zombie's chronological minions. Instead of relying purely on magic or traditional weaponry, characters utilize a vast inventory of secret gadgets ("Himitsu Dougu") discovered throughout the ages. Nobita relies on his surprisingly agile slingshot and marksmanship, Gian uses brute physical force, Shizuka employs supportive healing tech, and Suneo utilizes espionage gadgets. Doraemon serves as the tactical anchor, managing the party's dimensional pockets and deploying heavy-hitting gizmos like the Air Cannon or Time handkerchief to turn the tide against boss monsters. Experience points are earned to upgrade party stats, while yen-equivalent currency is traded for upgraded gadgetry at futuristic temporal shops.
