Description

Esper Boukentai is an exploration game which uses Jaleco’s arcade game Psychic 5 as the basis for the story and the cast of characters which you use throughout the game. Each character possesses different attributes, including their jumping ability, their ability to hover in mid-air, and their strength. As in the arcade, some characters must be rescued in order to make them playable. This game boasts over 50 household items which serve as animated enemies throughout each level.

Released originally as an arcade title by Jaleco in 1985 before being ported to the Famicom in 1987, *Esper Boukentai* (known internationally as *Cosmic Cop*) drops players into a sci-fi dystopia where a futuristic metropolis has been overrun by a ruthless syndicate of mutants and cyborgs. Unlike its coin-op predecessor, the Famicom port recontextualizes the action into a side-scrolling platformer rather than a pure shoot-em-up. The storyline tasks two psychic youths, Yu and Lia, with harnessing their latent ESP powers to liberate the captured city block by block, rescuing captive civilians while dismantling the biomechanical syndicate's high-tech infrastructure across treacherous, neon-lit stages.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The core gameplay revolves around managing a dual-natured offensive system where players utilize standard physical strikes alongside projectile psychic energy blasts. As you collect glowing ESP crystals scattered throughout the hazardous stages, your telekinetic meter charges, allowing you to unleash screen-clearing psychic waves or temporarily hover over bottomless pits and crushing traps. The platforming demands absolute precision; jumping physics require careful momentum management, and missing a floating platform often means instant death in the toxic sludge below. Boss encounters at the end of each sector test your reflexes, requiring you to exploit telegraphed patterns while dodging dense bullet hell projectiles in confined arenas.
