Description
Zunou Senkan Galg (“Brain Battleship Galg”), referred to as just Galg by the game’s title screen, is a vertical-scrolling shoot-em-up in which the player must navigate a serious of canyon-like environments for missing pieces to a war machine. Each stage has at least one piece, so the player must visit them all in order to find the necessary number. In addition to this, there are numerous secrets hidden throughout the many stages of the game, and the player frequently has to choose between multiple paths which lead to different stages. The game advertises itself as a “RPG” on its box art, referring to this additional layer of complexity.
Like The Tower of Druaga, it is considered a historically important game in Japan for the amount of secrets and mysteries it contains and the subsequent difficulty involved in reaching the end without this hidden knowledge. Therefore, it was one of the earliest games for the Famicom to feature its own printed game guide for players to follow. Zunou Senkan Galg is almost entirely unheard of outside of Japan, however, and has never seen a release outside of its native country.
Though it was published by dB-Soft, the game was developed by a group named “Team Bioteckers”. Galg is their only known video game credit.
Zunou Senkan Galg
Overview & History
Released by Tokuma Shoten in 1985 for the Famicom, Zunou Senkan Galg (Brain Battleship Galg) is one of the most infamously eccentric and notoriously difficult early titles on Nintendo's 8-bit platform. Developed during an era when game design was still heavily experimental, the game tasks players with piloting the titular bio-mechanical warship Galg through an abstract, labyrinthine cosmic dimension. Its development history is notable for attempting to blend side-scrolling platforming elements with real-time puzzle-solving and maze navigation, creating a punishing difficulty curve that frustrated a generation of Japanese gamers and cemented its cult status as a legendary retro curiosity.
Gameplay Features & Mechanics
Zunou Senkan Galg breaks away from standard linear shooters by dividing its gameplay into a complex network of multi-directional stages where progression depends heavily on collecting specific energy crystals and deciphering cryptic spatial layouts. The player controls the Galg, using its primary weapon to eradicate bizarre, floating alien entities and destructive biological anomalies. Movement requires extreme precision, as running out of fuel or making a single mistimed jump results in instant death. The game demands both spatial awareness and memory, as players must backtrack through shifting corridors while managing an unforgiving timer and scarce resource pools. The atmospheric, minimalist soundtrack and eerie visual palette contribute to an unsettling, claustrophobic atmosphere unique to mid-80s Famicom software.
Keyboard Controls
- Arrow Keys / D-Pad: Navigate the Galg through corridors and select directional movement
- Action Keys: Fire weapon (A) and jump/elevate (B)
- Enter: Start / Pause the game
