Description

JJ – Tobidase Daisakusen Part 2 is the sequel to 3-D WorldRunner, and was only released in Japan. Once again, the WorldRunner has to journey through different worlds and battle the Serpentbeasts that are terrorizing the people.

Among the dangers lurking in these worlds are mean alien creatures, columns of fire, bottomless pits and, of course, at the end of each level the Serpentbeasts themselves. Time is of the essence, and to succeed, the WorldRunner will have to learn not only how to battle his enemies, but above all how to elude them.

Whereas the first game used Anaglyphic 3D Glasses for it’s 3D effect, this sequel takes advantage of the Famicom 3D System to handle it’s 3D effects.

JJ: Tobidase Daisakusen Part II

Overview & History

Released by Square in December 1987 for the Famicom, *JJ: Tobidase Daisakusen Part II* serves as the sequel to *Tobidase Daisakusen*, known in North America as *The Rad Racer*. While its predecessor pioneered pseudo-3D racing, this installment pivots into an ambitious, fast-paced action-platformer viewed from a rear-facing perspective. The storyline follows our hero JJ, an intrepid adventurer tasked with navigating perilous, forward-scrolling terrain filled with indigenous tribes, aggressive wildlife, and treacherous obstacles. Developed during a transitional era for Square before their *Final Fantasy* breakout, the game brilliantly utilized the Famicom's hardware limits to simulate depth, creating an immersive arcade experience for home consoles. Although it never received an official North American NES release under this exact moniker, its distinct 3D visual style and memorable soundtrack cemented its cult status among retro gaming enthusiasts.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The core gameplay loop of *JJ: Tobidase Daisakusen Part II* relies on relentless forward momentum. As JJ auto-runs deeper into the screen, players must constantly react to sudden shifts in elevation, bottomless pits, rolling boulders, and charging enemies. Unlike standard side-scrollers, depth perception is crucial; players must time their jumps meticulously to clear chasms and land safely on narrow platforms. JJ is equipped with a projectile weapon to dispatch hostile natives and beasts blocking his path. Collecting specific items scattered throughout the stages rewards players with points and crucial power-ups, while navigating branching paths adds a layer of strategy to the otherwise frantic survival mechanics. Boss encounters punctuate the end of zones, testing the player's mastery of quick-twitch dodging and accurate shooting.
