Description

Kamen no Ninja Akakage’s only video game adaptation is a fairly straightforward side-scrolling action platformer. Your character Akakage is equipped with a sword, shuriken, boomerang, a variety of bombs and ninjutsu techniques to combat enemy ninja, warlords and kaiju. You don’t start with all of them, they are acquired by finding red hearts throughout the stages to talk to old man Tomizou. Akakage can also call for help from his allies Aokage and Shirokage.

The game is based on an anime of the same name that was released in the same time period, which in turn is based on a much older live-action tokusatsu (superhero) TV show about a masked vigilante ninja that helps people (similar to, say, Zorro or the Lone Ranger. Or Kamen Rider for that matter).

Kamen no Ninja: Akakage

Overview & History

Released by Toei Animation in 1988 exclusively for the Family Computer (Famicom) in Japan, Kamen no Ninja: Akakage adapts the classic live-action tokusatsu ninja drama into an 8-bit side-scrolling action platformer. Unlike standard linear action titles of its era, the game stands out for its unique blend of traditional feudal Japanese ninja tropes and supernatural sci-fi elements derived from Mitsuteru Yokoyama's original manga and television series. Players assume the role of the masked ninja Akakage, battling through historical fantasy landscapes swarming with rival shinobi, mechanical monstrosities, and demonic sorcerers. Though it never received an official localization outside of Japan, it remains a cult-classic collector's piece for retro gaming enthusiasts seeking authentic late-80s Famicom challenge and atmospheric period aesthetics.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Akakage navigates multi-tiered stages utilizing a blend of standard platforming and mystical ninjutsu. Armed primarily with a versatile katana for close-quarters combat, Akakage can also hurl shuriken to dispatch distant aerial foes. The core gameplay loop revolves around managing a specialized magic meter that fuels Akakage's signature ninja arts—including devastating screen-clearing fire spells, temporary invulnerability, and clone generation to confuse incoming hordes. Distinctive level design incorporates vertical scaling, treacherous pitfall hazards, and hidden wall-cavities housing health-restoring scrolls and max-power upgrades. Boss encounters at the end of each stage require precise timing against foes with erratic movement patterns and multi-phase attack strings, demanding mastery over Akakage's double-jump capabilities and responsive hit-detection.
