Description

Mottomo Abunai Deka (“More Dangerous Detectives”) is a 1990 Famicom game based on Mottomo Abunai Deka, a 1989 movie spin-off of a cop show (Abunai Deka) which ran from 1986 to 1987 on the Nippon TV network.

In the game, the two detectives from the franchise – Taka and Yuuji – fight against hordes of mobsters and criminals in a series of side-scrolling levels, with both characters available simultaneously in the game’s two-player mode. The pair traditionally stick to their service handguns, but can pick up alternative limited-use weaponry like grenades or a machine gun in various spots across the levels.

Overview & History

Released exclusively in Japan in 1989 by Toei Animation, Mottomo Abunai Deka (The Most Dangerous Detective) is an action-packed Famicom title based on the wildly popular live-action buddy-cop TV drama and film franchise. The game places players in the shoes of the iconic, trench-coated detectives Takayuki "Taka" Takayama and Yuji "Yusha" Ooshita. Unlike standard beat-'em-ups of the era, the title captures the chaotic charm and high-octane firearm action of the source material. Tasked with dismantling a massive criminal syndicate operating within the bustling streets of Yokohama, the detectives must rely on fast-paced gunplay, daring vehicle pursuits, and quick-witted partner cooperation to survive the investigation before the case blows wide open.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The game alternates between two distinct styles of gameplay: frantic side-scrolling shoot-'em-up levels and intense vehicle-based driving segments. During on-foot missions, players can freely switch between Taka and Yuji, each bringing distinct attributes to the chaotic firefights. Taka wields his signature S&W revolver with deadly precision, while Yuji relies on agile acrobatics and a high-rate-of-fire shotgun. Environmental interaction is crucial; players can duck behind crates, kick doors open to surprise armed thugs, and pick up dropped enemy weaponry like submachine guns and grenades. The driving stages require players to navigate the streets of Yokohama in the duo's famous Nissan Leopard, dodging civilian traffic while blasting pursuing motorcycle gangs. Health meters are unforgiving, demanding precise timing, aggressive suppression fire, and tactical use of cover to survive punishing boss encounters at the end of each precinct.
