Description

After a devastating nuclear war humanity is on the brink of extinction. In order to survive, robots and cyborgs were created to assist the remaining humans. However, in 2199 AD a cyborg revolt against the human masters is being led by a cyborg named De Gaulle. It’s now up to Altiana, a teenage female cyborg who wants to prove that she is still on the humans’ side, to put an end to the revolt and stop the rebellious De Gaulle.

Gameplay involves exploring seven different maze-like planets and destroying their guardians. Players control Altiana, who is able to fly with her jetpack. Altiana’s main attack weapon are bombs, although she can acquire additional weapons such as a laser beam to defeat her enemies. There are also special items to collect such as health cells which extend Altiana’s maximum health. After defeating a guardian the planet will start to self destruct and Atliana must escape the planet before that happens.

Released by Kemco in 1986 for the Famicom Disk System and later ported to the NES as Space Hunter (also known as Space Hunter: The Adventure of Aldebaran), this sci-fi platformer combines side-scrolling action with overhead maze navigation. Set in the distant year 2282, players assume the role of the cyborg bounty hunter Al as he tracks down four notorious mutants—Death, King, Jack, and Queen—who have seized control of multiple hostile sectors. Unlike typical linear NES shooters, Space Hunter requires players to explore labyrinthine base complexes, gather data chips, and acquire vital weapon upgrades before taking down area bosses. Though initially overlooked in the West due to its cryptic objectives and steep difficulty curve, it remains a fascinating cult classic of the 8-bit era.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Space Hunter splits its action into two distinct perspectives: horizontal action-platforming stages where Al battles bizarre alien creatures, and overhead navigation zones where players pilot a vehicular ship between planetary sectors. In the platforming segments, Al can run, duck, and unleash an arm-cannon blast at incoming foes. Environmental interaction is crucial; players must shoot specific wall panels to reveal hidden doors, secret energy tanks, and crucial tracking devices. Defeating normal enemies yields currency and experience upgrades, but careless movement often leads to cheap hits from sudden hazards. To survive the harsh environments of Aldebaran, players must carefully manage Al's health meter and utilize acquired power-ups like the laser spread shot and high-jump boots to bypass seemingly insurmountable obstacles.
