Overview & History

While Taito's legendary shooter originally defined the arcade golden age in 1978, the 1985 Famicom port—later brought to the NES via unlicensed Tengen cartridges and later official compilations—transformed the sit-down cabinet classic into a living room staple. Unlike the vertical arcade monitor, the NES adaptation optimized the playfield for horizontal CRT displays, introducing vibrant color palettes while retaining Tomohiro Nishikado's tense, escalating alien march.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Players control a solitary mobile laser base stationed at the bottom of the screen, tasked with obliterating relentless waves of descending extraterrestrials before they breach the planetary defense line. Four destructible bunkers offer temporary sanctuary, though enemy plasma fire gradually chips away at their structural integrity. The signature mechanic relies on the invaders speeding up and lowering with every eliminated unit, creating a frantic crescendo as the final, twitchy alien darts across the upper matrix. Periodically, a mysterious flying saucer streaks across the top of the screen, rewarding precise marksmanship with bonus points.
