Description

Sukeban Deka makes it way to the Famicom in the first and only game for the system. This game is an adaptation of the third season of the Sukeban Deka live-action TV series. The new yo-yo slinger to take up the mantle of Saki Asamiya is Yui Kazama. And this time, she is not alone. Joining her sisters Yuka and Yuma, they are tasked with combating a psychic terrorist and his army.

Sukeban Deka III gives you control over all 3 Kazama sisters from the TV show, who each have slightly different sprites. The game starts in an overhead free-roaming stage, but subsequently switches to side-scrolling perspective in the following stages. Though mostly a standard beat ’em up, the game has some light RPG elements. Each sister – who you can switch out as the active character at any moment – has her own level and ninja arts and they gain experience individually.

Overview & History

Released exclusively in Japan in 1989 by Bandai for the Family Computer (Famicom), Sukeban Deka III adapts the wildly popular live-action adolescent delinquent detective television drama. Unlike the previous franchise iterations that followed Saki Asamiya, this 8-bit digital adaptation shifts its narrative focus to the Yagami sisters—Yui, Yuka, and Sumire—as they use their undercover authority to dismantle criminal syndicates while wielding their signature weapon: the reinforced steel yo-yo. Although it never received an official localization outside of Japan, the title stands out for blending traditional platforming stages with point-and-click investigation sequences, perfectly capturing the gritty, rebellious aesthetic of late-80s Japanese pop culture.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The game splits its core mechanics between action-platforming stages and cinematic adventure segments. Players alternate control between the three Yagami sisters, each possessing distinct operational traits necessary for neutralizing rival delinquents and Yakuza thugs. In the side-scrolling action levels, your primary offensive tool is the iconic iron-weighted yo-yo. By mastering the yo-yo mechanics, players can execute standard forward strikes, upward diagonal sweeps, and a devastating spinning shield maneuver that deflects incoming projectiles. Successfully landing consecutive hits builds up a special tension meter, allowing characters to unleash screen-clearing signature attacks. Between action stages, players must navigate dialogue trees and interrogate informants, utilizing gathered evidence and items to advance the plot through various Tokyo high schools and underground hideouts.
