Description

Super Pinball is a NES pinball sim, providing six inter-connected tables for the player to explore and get high scores on. The overall goal of the game is to actually find and collect certain Mahjong pieces to complete a winning hand, but the Mahjong game itself has little to do with the actual gameplay besides providing a winning condition.

The game was published by Coconuts Japan, a company best known for publishing the Pachio-kun pachinko games. Pachio-kun himself makes a brief cameo on Super Pinball’s title screen.

Super Pinball

Overview & History

Released by Coconuts Japan in 1991 for the Family Computer (Famicom) and later localized for the Nintendo Entertainment System, *Super Pinball* offered a surprisingly deep simulation in an era dominated by arcade action. While western audiences often associated pinball on the NES with Nintendo's own *Pinball* or *High Speed*, this title stood out by introducing distinct themed tables featuring scrolling screens, dynamic enemy encounters, and a rudimentary narrative framing where players must conquer different mystical worlds by achieving high scores and triggering specific mechanical sequences. Unlike standard flat-screen tables, *Super Pinball* utilized vertical scrolling fields that required players to nudge the machine strategically to save balls from draining in wide side gutters.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The game splits its action across multiple specialized tables, each incorporating classic silver-ball physics alongside fantasy-adventure tropes. Players do not just hit bumpers; they must activate hidden switches to unlock boss battles, collect hidden treasures, and trigger multi-ball modes. The flippers respond with arcade-like precision, and players can execute a "tilt" mechanic by tapping the nudge buttons—though overdoing it results in a penalty. Scoring combos lights up multiplier ramps, while defeating on-screen monsters opens up secret warp tunnels that transport the silver sphere to bonus stages where players can rack up massive point bonuses before time expires.
